I'm rather hoping that when this hits stable you will be releasing one final long term i686 iso. Chakra is such a beautiful disto and has always been super stable on my machines. It would give me a recovery plan without needing a heavy download to bring it up to final.
Anyone found a good x86_64 emulator for their i686 yet? ![]()
SteveK, you're awesome man!!
Edit:
I added "nouveau.modset=0 xmodule=vesa" and was able to load Chakra Live. It will install from there and once the non-free nvidia drivers are in place, things will work well.
Thanks tetris4, no panic (yet). If this install does bork for some reason I'm going to be in trouble though. Fingers crossed!
ok, let's back up and try this again.
Assume I've had to install a new harddrive with no OS and I want to put Chakra on it. This Dell IS a 64-bit machine.
I've downloaded chakra-2012.09-Claire-x86_64.iso, confirmed that the md5sums is correct and written it to a usb stick with Suse ImagWriter.
I've insterted the usb and selected "Boot from usb" from the bios menu.
It boots happily but I do not see the grub menu. There is no pause. It goes directly to the Chakra menu.
From here, any option I select starts fine and then does a "kernel panic". I can not get into the grub menu to change the startup parameters to try and write out that nvidia module.
My only option at this point is to look for a different distro that plays nice with this BIOS. This is NOT an option I want to consider. I LIKE Chakra!
sorry, architecture was the wrong word - hardware would be the better term. Sorry, tired and not thinking well.
My installed version of Chakra runs just fine. It has just "lost" my usb Logitech headset. Present but greyed out.
The Live Boot USB on the other hand gives me a kernel panic as soon as I try and run Chakra from USB, either to Terminal or to desktop.
I'll go back to an earlier iso if I really need/want to re-install. At this point you've got a problem with your iso on this architecture. Just saying . . .
Morning tetris4, yeah I tried that. Kernel panic. I think I'm out of luck until a new iso is released, maybe with a bit of a delay built in between grub and the install screen? ![]()
LiveCD booting from usb. LiveUSB ?
. . . If I could figure out how to get into grub. There is no pause. Chakra comes up immediately.
Thanks for the reply Inkane.
1. It's easier to spend 30 minutes re-insalling Chakra and all my programs than it is to spend 2 days trying to solve the problem of why my Logitech USB headset has disappeared.
2. There is no pause at the grub menu to edit the boot parameters.
3. Trying to start the LiveCD with the proprietary drivers locks before it gets that far.
4. The Chakra LiveDVD just should NOT do this!
5. My other two machines are 32-bit. This is the only one I've got left to play with. ![]()
Any hints appreciated.
Linux 3.4.6-1-CHAKRA #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 20 02:25:41 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Just had a chance to try the new chakra-2012.09-Claire-x86_64.iso
kernel panic!
This Dell Inspiron 620 has a 64-bit Intel i5 - 2300 @ 2800GHz processor, nvidia
GeForce GT420 video and 8G of installed Ram.
I'm presently running Chakra 64-bit, Siduction 64-bit, and a small partition holding the original Win7. These are working ok.
I'm tring to install:
chakra-2012.09-Claire-x86_64.iso
This was burned to usb using the Suse ImageWriter on my x86_64 Dell tower using Chakra 2012.02 (?) Archimedes x86_64. md5sums of the iso is good. I've tried burning to a different usb in case that was the problem.
I'll try and get screen shots attached . . . Linked BBCode . . .
Thank you
I like a minimal live installation both on my netbook and as a rescue iso. I use a 1G stick for this. My next size up is 8G which I don't want to use for even the full-blown iso. If I could figure out how to partition my large stick to give me a useable storage area, I'd be ok going that route. And if I am missing something on the minimal . . . hey, that's what pacman is for ![]()
sigh . . . yes I did a clean install but I used the old .mozilla folder so I didn't have to re-install plugins and reorganize the window. And whatever had changed the arrow designations was transfered over with the old folder.
Deleted .mozilla and re-started Firefox. Problem solved.
I'm sorry, I really haven't kept track. I'm going to have to start keeping a record of updates and be more aware of problems that may show up.
I'm using the netbook extensively right now and mostly use a usb mouse. Took a while before the arrow scrolling "didn't feel right" anymore and then more time before I decided maybe I should ask about it. Tried a couple of older versions of Firefox in case that was the problem - it wasn't. ![]()
Upgraded to testing (networkmanager-0.9.4.0-1). ipv6 problem is still present.
uh, I didn't. Firefox is working. Rekonq is having problems. I'll disable ipv6 and report back. But wouldn't it effect Firefox too?
Edit: ok, disabled ipv6. rekonq is fixed. Strange!
Unfortunately no. The problem does exist here in a new install of 2012.4 done yesterday and before updating. It initially showed up in 2012.02 a week or so ago but I''d been running testing on it (updating daily). Trying to eliminate the problem lead to the clean install.
In the last week or so my up and down arrow keys which I use for page scrolling on my netbook are acting as Page Up and Page Down instead. Any ideas on how I can recover the normal scrolling behavior?
Possibly related, F11 in Firefox no longer gives me full screen mode. It still maximizes the window but only removes the topic bar and leaves me with the address bar and navigation controls. (Edit: Fixed - somehow "browser.fullscreen.autohide;true" had been set to false.)
I did a clean re-install of chakra-2012.04-Archimedes-CD-i686.iso but this symptom showed up before this (2102.02 testing), and also continues with 2012.04 stable and testing.

Don.t know if this is related but I'll start here . . .
Clean install of chakra-2012.04-Archimedes-CD-i686.iso gives me the following error when trying to load
Menu > Chakra > Forums or Homepage
www.chakra-project.org: Socket operation timed outrekonq seems to be the problem. Firefox is working fine.

4. YOU MUST KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.. . . that's it for me then . . . ![]()
Tried re-installing phc-intel again and had the same problem with acpi_cpufreq. Just doesn't want to work on this machine. I'm not going to pursue it any further at this point. <see above>
that sounds very interesting . . .
I've been using my netbook extensively for the last week or so and getting a consistent 4 1/2 to 5 1/4 hours out of it with general usage. Only problem I've been experiencing is very erratic behavior out of my Logitech M185 usb mouse (stubby dongle). The touchpad has been working fine so it's not a major issue.
Alejandro, when I had PHC installed acpi_cpufreq would not load on boot. Once I removed PHC, acpi worked fine. Hadn't changed kernels at that point so running phc-setup should have been a non-issue. I'm doing fine without undervolting. This netbook is not a speed-demon in Power Saving mode anyway. I won't sacrifice anymore responsiveness for a few more minutes of battery. ![]()
Got an honest 5 hours out of this machine yesterday, One 50 minute avi on "Power On Demand" and 4 hours of web surfing, chat and a bit of youtube on "Power Saving".
Having better control over my power settings really seems to have made an impact.
Fully charged battery and with webcam, eth, and bluetooth disabled, only wifi and card reader active.
With Jupiter working in Power Saving mode: ~ 7hr 15min.
Without Jupiter running: ~ 6hr and 15min.
Before Jupiter, In real life I've only ever got about 4hr on battery power so the 'battery remaining' figures are somewhat optimistic.
Over the next couple of weeks I'm be using the netbook extensively and will have a better idea of real world usage.
