KDEmod 4.4.0 released - READTHIS

We are glad to present you KDEmod 4.4.0. It has lots of new features such as:

* Plasma Netbook debuts in 4.4.0. Plasma Netbook is an alternative interface to the Plasma Desktop, specifically designed for ergonomic use on netbooks and smaller notebooks. The Plasma framework has been built from the beginning with non-desktop target devices in mind as well. Plasma Netbook shares many components with the Plasma Desktop, but is specifically designed to make good use of the small space, and to be more suitable also for touchscreen input. The Plasma Netbook shell features a full-screen application launcher and search interface, and a Newspaper which offers many widgets to display content from the web and small utilities already known from Plasma Netbook's sibling.

* The Social Desktop initiative brings improvements to the Community widget (formerly known as Social Desktop widget), allowing users to send messages and find friends right from within the widget. The new Social News widget shows a livestream of what is going on in the social network of the user and the new Knowledge Base widget allows users to search for answers and questions from different providers including openDesktop.org's own knowledge base.

* The new tabbing feature in KWin allows the user to group windows together in a tabbed interface, making the handling of large numbers of applications easier and more efficient. Further improvements to window handling include snapping windows to a side of the screen and maximizing windows by dragging them. The KWin Team also cooperated with the Plasma developers on further improving the interaction between the workspace applications bringing smoother animations and increased performance. Finally artists can more easily develop and share themes for the windows thanks to the development of a more configurable window decorator with the ability to use scalable graphics.

With every big update in software there are some things you have as user to do to get KDEmod 4.4.0 smoothly working for you:

Installation Walkthru

* read this detailed install guide if needed
* backup your files like contacts of kaddressbook since it got rewritte and you have to setup it completely new.
* run sudo pacman -Rd libattica followed by sudo pacman -Syu
* apply all pkg replacements
* remove any old plasmoid you kept from KDE SC 4.3 such as smooth tasks (kdemod-taskhandlers)
* If you update from virtuoso 5 as nepomuk backend you will have to convert your database (Nepomuk Virtuoso Converter) or simply do
   rm -Rv ~/.kdemod4/share/apps/nepomuk && rm -v ~/.kdemod4/share/config/nepomuk*
   - the latter is of course only recommend if you had not used nepomuk's tagging and comment features.
* In case of any error, try using a new user account or (re)moving KDEmod's
   configuration which can be found at ~/.kdemod4 /tmp/kde-* /var/tmp/kdecache-*.
   Akonadi saves its data at ~/.config/akonadi and ~/.local/share/akonadi
* reboot your system

*For all the errors related to MO catalogs like this one:

kdemod-kde-l10n-es: /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/choqok.mo exists in filesystem           
you can use the -f switch ( sudo pacman -Syuf )

But be sure you only have errors related to .mo files



We are fixing some problems with Aqpm, our wrapper around ALPM, so for now CHASE and SHAMAN may don't work, use PACMAN instead

Well use the france servers for extra and core. There was a big update doing testing to extra/core move. Wait some days before updating  ...

after downloading the packages I see this:

hi, is there any information on what the differences are between vanilla kde 4.4 (from arch) and kdemod 4.4?  other than the obvious differences in split packages, vanilla vs kdemod theme, etc.  I mean more any specific patches that bring new features, or different features, or things like that?

I'm getting an error after downloading the packages

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
/usr/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1.mo exists in both 'kdemod-kde-l10n-en-gb' and 'polkit-kde'
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

What do you mean by "remove any old plasmoid you kept from KDE SC 4.3"?

Do you mean I should remove all my plasmoids from my desktop?

You were right, I temporarily switched to the official arch repos and setup worked.

But still there is the arxin problem.
after pacman -S kdemod, pacman lists the packages to install. arxin-git is NOT listed. I answer yes to install everything.
Then pacman says the group kdemod includes an ingnored package : arxin-git (from kdemod-playground). (I have not that package in my ignore list. ).
If I answer yes to install everything, the pacman stops saying there is a conflict betweed arxin and axin-git.
I have to answer no, not to install evertyhing and say no when arxin-git is asked.

For me the update stops too because there be files which exists and in the case of at example digikam, kipiplugin* and tellico i don't know why this files be included in kdemod-kde-l10n-de. If anyone knows what is better to wait or to install the language package fromn extra feel free to say it.smile

It seems too that kdemod-kdebase-workspace includes now the windowlist plasmoid but this is not a problem.

Well, I was finally able to update my system after removing notification-daemon, but...what a crap! After first login I tried to set up the panel and it's components, and suddenly the Plasma Workspace started to crash. Now it happens instantaneously after I login, and I'm left with a totally black screen with mouse cursor. The only thing I can do is "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and log out. Not even creating a totally new account has helped so far. Thanks God I double boot with Windows Vista...

I got a conflict between libssh and kdemod-libssh.
I resolved it replacing kdemo-lobssh with libssh, but 'm not happy.
Kde 4.4 now seems to work.

i updated from KDEmod 4.3.3 to KDEmod 4.4.0 but after restart kde didnt login and it was showing an error msg about kstartupconfig4 ....

by help of miko777 i found that i should install polkit-qt pkg & my trouble solved ! why polkit-qt isnt in dependencies of KDEmod 4.4.0 ?

Yeah, but Stasks was a plasmoid you provided (as default) in KDE 4.3.x. How should I know to remove it, before updating? That's why everyone here has problems with it.

I really don't get it. We are building against core/extra and don't use testing-repo at all. Seems lot of people want to use our pkgs with testing repo. I don't have any fileconflicts so far. notification-deamon is a gnome program. We are kde-only orianted so we don't test those. We have lots of documents with what repos our repos work and what we support. Use only core and extra repo from arch what we used to compile our pkgs!

Well, than I misunderstood that part, because stasks was enabled by default. It was part of chakra's panel (and I'm a little confused about that).
