Any netbook optimizations for KDE?

So, while I'm loving KDE (the testing version, the stable version is different enough that i'm not a huge fan?) my netbook seems more sluggish than I'd prefer. Are there any tweaks I can use that will help speed things up a bit? I've heard that turning off strigi is a big boost, which i think is only a file indexer, so I can live without that. I've heard stuff about Nepomuk, which I'm DEFINITElY not turning off as it provides more use to me (more than simply file indexing at least).

Re: Any netbook optimizations for KDE?

My list:
1. Turned off strigi and nepomuk, which did help quite a bit (especially now that strigi liked to run even on battery).  2. Disable as many desktop effects as possible (or off completely if you don't mind the look).
3. Looking into disabling Akonadi as well, but this might not work for everyone.

Ideally you want to turn off as many background and startup processes as possible.  A big one for me was not launching dropbox on startup but only when I needed it.  As always, I'm looking for more ways to speed it up as well.

Akonadi cannot be disabled if you need to use any kdepim app like Kmail for instance, KDEPim needs the Akonadi server running, otherwise you can't use it.

Right, I don't use kdepim apps so I can disable it, many people will not be able to.

Re: Any netbook optimizations for KDE?

I don't use any kdepim things, as far as I know. However, I have a lot of Akonadi_contact processes running when I look at the system monitor (even after a fresh startup). Why is this?

Re: Any netbook optimizations for KDE?

Any clues why on start up I have several Akonadi services running? One is listed several times as akonadi_contact. I thought Akonadi wasn't suppose to start unless it was specifically called upon by a program I opened.
I also have a good number of nepomukservices open as well.

is there a way to stop these from loading on startup?

Re: Any netbook optimizations for KDE?

Nepomuk you said you wanted to keep enabled, so they are going to start up.  Akonadi starts with the calendar reminders I know, but I'm not sure what else loads them at startup by default.

Re: Any netbook optimizations for KDE?

yeah, i just thought it was weird that so many processes were started for both. So can i replace the calender with a non-akonadi version, because I don't like so many processes being open for a single use (calendar)
